It is southwest custom to use the term "alabado" to describe religious folk poetry, particularity that associated with the Penitentes, a religious sect in northern New Mexico.

New Mexico Elegies

Based on a fragment of Gregorian Chant, it is a series of very contrapuntal variations; the methods used are canon sicilienne, passacaglia, fugue and fantasie. It is a somber procession from sadness and loss, through anguish and pain finally arriving at acceptance and release.
